Tess Gerritsen – The Mephisto Club (Rizzoli & Isles #6)

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

Evil exists. Evil walks the streets. And evil has spawned a diabolical new disciple in this white-knuckle thriller from New York Times bestselling author Tess Gerritsen.

PECCAVI
The Latin word is scrawled in blood at the scene of a young woman’s brutal murder: I HAVE SINNED. It’s a chilling Christmas greeting for Boston medical examiner Maura Isles and Detective Jane Rizzoli, who swiftly link the victim to controversial celebrity psychiatrist Joyce O’Donnell, Jane’s professional nemesis and member of a sinister cabal called the Mephisto Club.

On top of Beacon Hill, the club’s acolytes devote themselves to the analysis of evil: Can it be explained by science? Does it have a physical presence? Do demons walk the earth? Drawing on a wealth of dark historical data and mysterious religious symbolism, the Mephisto scholars aim to prove a startling theory: that Satan himself exists among us.

With the grisly appearance of a corpse on their doorstep, it’s clear that someone or something is indeed prowling the city. The members of the club begin to fear the very subject of their study. Could this maniacal killer be one of their own or have they inadvertently summoned an evil entity from the darkness?

Delving deep into the most baffling and unusual case of their careers, Maura and Jane embark on a terrifying journey to the very heart of evil, where they encounter a malevolent foe more dangerous than any they have ever faced . . . one whose work is only just beginning.

There are crimes you can’t simply explain or understand, only as created by evil, and criminals you can only describe with the word monster. Members of Mephisto Club have chosen not to run away from it but to explore and to study it as closely as possible. But there might be a day when the price for that is too high. For ‘’huge’’ pleasure for detective Jane Rizzoli psychologist Joyce O’Donnell (from previous books in the series) is a member of this club, plus ideas by other members makes Jane a very big skeptic.

A brutally murdered woman’s body is found, and initially everyone thinks about religious/satanic connection. Even investigators with experience are startled. This time Maura Isles gets involved very deeply in the case so much that her life is in more danger than ever before.

Fragmentarily the reader gets the murderer’s POV. Also some chapter from POV of Lily Saul, 12 years ago she lost her entire family, and later was so frightened that was forced to fly over the ocean and to look behind the shoulder every day.

For both Rizzoli and Isles there are some complications in their personal lifes. Rizzoli’s parents after decades long life together have very big disagreement and are very close to divorce. Rizzoli has no option but to intervene and bring them to some sense. Meanwhile Maura struggles with her feelings for Father Daniel Brophy. Although her mind realizes the reality, her feelings and heart tells her something else.

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

The year 1984 has come and gone, but George Orwell’s prophetic, nightmarish vision in 1949 of the world we were becoming is timelier than ever. 1984 is still the great modern classic of “negative utopia” -a startlingly original and haunting novel that creates an imaginary world that is completely convincing, from the first sentence to the last four words. No one can deny the novel’s hold on the imaginations of whole generations, or the power of its admonitions -a power that seems to grow, not lessen, with the passage of time.

Mana recenzija/My review

Man jau šķiet, ka izdomājums vien viņš ir.

When the Party is everything and nothing else doesn’t matter. It controls the past and history, and is changing it every day as they fancy. You can be arrested just because you had wrong thoughts (thought crime), not even mentioning if you dare to say something aloud. Furthermore you have to be aware of your facial expression because if someone just thinks that you are suspicious you might be arrested; then there won’t be anything that you wouldn’t confess.

The absurd in this world is everywhere. Like the newspeak – changing and distorting the language so eventually no one could say anything ‘’wrong’’.

Superpowers in size of continents have emerged which are constantly at war with each other. At least that’s what the Party wants citizens to think so they would be satisfied with how they are living. Every superpowers sounded alike, except that in everyone those who have power are living in luxury. Besides the big bad countries enemy where the story takes part is Emmanuel Goldstein, and every single day the Party makes sure that you remember it. My guess is that he isn’t even real.

We are following Winston Smith who loyally tries to do everything by the rules and still falls into disgrace. It seemed that everyone else was didn’t want to think outside the Parties given box, letting them to do what they want.

Maybe in 1949 this version was negative utopia, but knowing history this story seemed to reflect more of the past, of course on completely different level. Nevertheless it wouldn’t hurt vigilant so the history wouldn’t repeat itself.

In the far future world children are created artificially with heavy genetic manipulation, and the following upbringing completely controlled by those in power, starting already when they are in cradles with hypnotic therapy where they forced to listen to repeated sentences until they believe to them as their own thoughts later in life. Such an anarchy as parents is something unthinkable and even repulsive.

Society is divided in castes and at the top besides World Controllers are alphas who have more privileges, plus there are no old people. At least according to ideas and thoughts of this system leaders their world order is the best thing that has happened and society in general wants nothing else as to be happy and not to think about for themselves, of course for World Controllers that’s conveniently. If I understand correctly such situation was born after devastating nine year war. To prevent instability there isn’t anything that wouldn’t be done and everything unpleasant is perceived as a risk towards chaos.

There are still some places, reservations, no doubt because of Controllers generosities, where people still are living as before enjoying culture and also their rights to be unhappy. Mainly we have Bernard’s POV, but there are few chapters from POV of other characters like the savage (at least I didn’t hear his name). Women in this world don’t have much saying, and although mostly it’s genetic breading pregnancy is still practiced but only as something to cheer women up. Partly it could be justified because World Controllers are controlling science and what can it do. In fears that some new invention might bring trouble they are actually preventing the growth.

However the story is about future world I think this book in its style of language and predictions have outdated itself, probably also some influence of the time.

Certainly this book is trying to discuss the question how technology is affecting each of us and as society together; is it doing more good or bad?

About the author:

Stephen Booth C2

A newspaper and magazine journalist for over 25 years, Stephen Booth was born in the English Pennine mill town of Burnley. He was brought up on the Lancashire coast at Blackpool, where he attended Arnold School. He began his career in journalism by editing his school magazine, and wrote his first novel at the age of 12.

After graduating from City of Birmingham Polytechnic (now Birmingham City University), Stephen moved to Manchester to train as a teacher, but escaped from the profession after a terrifying spell as a trainee teacher in a big city comprehensive school.

Starting work on his first newspaper in Wilmslow, Cheshire, in 1974, Stephen was a specialist rugby union reporter, as well as working night shifts as a sub-editor on the Daily Express and The Guardian. This was followed by periods with local newspapers in Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. He was at various times Production Editor of the Farming Guardian magazine, Regional Secretary of the British Guild of Editors, and one of the UK’s first qualified assessors for the NVQ in Production Journalism.

Freelance work began with rugby reports for national newspapers and local radio stations. Stephen has also had articles and photographs published in a wide range of specialist magazines, from Scottish Memories to Countrylovers Magazine, from Cat World to Canal and Riverboat, and one short story broadcast on BBC radio. In 1999, his writing career changed direction when, in rapid succession, he was shortlisted for the Dundee Book Prize and the Crime Writers’ Association Debut Dagger competition for new writers, then won the £5,000 Lichfield Prize for his unpublished novel The Only Dead Thing, and signed a two-book contract with HarperCollins for a series of crime novels.

In 2000, Stephen’s first published novel, Black Dog, marked the arrival in print of his best known creations – two young Derbyshire police detectives, DC Ben Cooper and DS Diane Fry. Black Dog was the named by the London Evening Standard as one of the six best crime novels of the year – the only book on their list written by a British author. In the USA, it won the Barry Award for Best British Crime Novel and was nominated for an Anthony Award for Best First Mystery. The second Cooper & Fry novel, Dancing with the Virgins, was shortlisted for the UK’s top crime writing award, the Gold Dagger, and went on to win Stephen a Barry Award for the second year running.

In 2003, Detective Constable Ben Cooper was a finalist for the Sherlock Award for the Best Detective created by a British author, thanks to his exploits in the third book of the series, Blood on the Tongue. The publication of Blind to the Bones that year resulted in Stephen winning the Crime Writers’ Association’s ‘Dagger in the Library’ Award, presented to the author whose books have given readers most pleasure. The same book was nominated for the Theakston’s UK Crime Novel of the Year award in 2005. Subsequent titles have been One Last Breath, The Dead Place (both finalists for the UK Crime Novel of the Year in 2006 and 2007), Scared to Live, Dying to Sin, The Kill Call, Lost River, The Devil’s Edge, Dead and Buried and Already Dead. The 14th Cooper & Fry novel, The Corpse Bridge, was published in the UK in June 2014 and will be followed by The Murder Road in 2015. A special Ben Cooper story, Claws, was released in 2007 to launch the new ‘Crime Express’ imprint, and was re-issued in April 2011.

All the books are set in England’s beautiful and atmospheric Peak District. At the end of 2006, the Peak District National Park Authority featured locations from the Cooper & Fry series in their new Peak Experience visitors’ guides, recognising the interest in the area inspired by the books.

The Cooper & Fry series is now published by Little, Brown in the UK and by the Witness Impulse imprint of HarperCollins in the USA. In addition to publication in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, translation rights in the series have so far been sold in fifteen languages – French, German, Dutch, Italian, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Czech, Romanian, Bulgarian and Japanese.

While living on a smallholding in Yorkshire, Stephen began breeding pedigree dairy goats as a hobby (and as an extreme contrast to working in busy news rooms!). He later served on the British Goat Society’s governing body and judged at shows all over Britain. He has been chairman of several clubs, including the charity fund-raising Just Kidding Goat Society, and probably his most unusual role was as a director of an artificial insemination company. Specialist publications he’s been responsible for include a book on one of the country’s oldest goat breeds, The Toggenburg. He is a former President of the Toggenburg Breeders Society.

Stephen left journalism in 2001 to write novels full time. He and his wife Lesley live in a village in rural Nottinghamshire, England (home of Robin Hood and the Pilgrim Fathers). They have three cats.

In recent years, Stephen Booth has become a Library Champion in support of the UK’s ‘Love Libraries’ campaign, and a Reading Champion to support the National Year of Reading. He has also represented British literature at the Helsinki Book Fair in Finland, filmed a documentary for 20th Century Fox on the French detective Vidocq, taken part in online chats for World Book Day, and given talks at many conferences, conventions, libraries, bookshops and festivals around the world.

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

A blessed event becomes a nightmare for pregnant homicide detective Jane Rizzoli when she finds herself on the wrong side of a hostage crisis in this timely and relentless new thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of Body Double.

A nameless, beautiful woman appears to be just another corpse in the morgue. An apparent suicide, she lies on a gurney, awaiting the dissecting scalpel of medical examiner Maura Isles. But when Maura unzips the body bag and looks down at the body, she gets the fright of her life. The corpse opens its eyes.

Very much alive, the woman is rushed to the hospital, where with shockingly cool precision, she murders a security guard and seizes hostages . . . one of them a pregnant patient, Jane Rizzoli.

Who is this violent, desperate soul, and what does she want? As the tense hours tick by, Maura joins forces with Jane’s husband, FBI agent Gabriel Dean, to track down the mysterious killer’s identity. When federal agents suddenly appear on the scene, Maura and Gabriel realize that they are dealing with a case that goes far deeper than just an ordinary hostage crisis.

Only Jane, trapped with the armed madwoman, holds the key to the mystery. And only she can solve it–if she survives the night.

Mana recenzija/My review

Pagājis aptuveni mēnesis kopš Body Double beigām, un Ridzoli kuru katru brīdi var sākties dzemdības. Kur viņai tāda ‘’veiksme’’, ka tieši attiecīgajā dienā kļūst par ķīlnieci slimnīcā. Nodaļas līdz attiecīgajam momentam arī ļoti labas – teiksim tā, reizēm arī miroņi pamostas.

Ik pa brīdim atskats pagātnē no Milas skatpunkta(tagadnes stāstā ienāk vēlāk).

Ķīlnieku krīze saceļ kājās bezmaz visus Bostonas žurnālistus, bet viens no viņiem, Pīters Lūkass, uzskata, ka sava darba godīga pildīšana nav pietiekama.

It’s been about a month since Body Double ending and it’s time when the labour for Rizzoli could start any moment now. How ‘’lucky’’ you have to be that in the exact day you become a hostage in the hospital. Chapters leading to that moment are very good – let’s just say that sometimes dead people might wake up.

From time to time there are flashbacks from POV of Mila (she comes into the present story later). Together with her is one of hostage takers Olena. Hoping for American dream girls from East Europe goes over the ocean with the promise of a job but can’t imagine what kind of job it will be. You might think slavery doesn’t exist anymore and definitely not in the USA, but in this books they become sex slaves. Environment that these girls are force to live in are just horrible. One night Mila and Olena are really lucky escaping that place and sure death (at that moment). That event brings them together with Joe. Many times on CNN I have seen documentaries about this problem.

The hostage crisis assembles almost all Boston journalists as everyone tries to understand what’s happening. But one of them, Peter Lukas, thinks that what he receives for his job isn’t enough. Again I have to think how statistically probable is the chance before the crisis when Maura Isles trusted exactly to him to tell the story about what happened in morgue.

I would say that Vanish could be separated in two parts; the second would be after the hostages are freed. Unfortunately for Olena and Joe it doesn’t end well but until the moment all hell breaks loose they, especially Joe, sounded like pure conspirators, like that the big corporations actually control the country.

They are not that far from truth, only in this case it’s about abusing power trying to cover up what you have done.

Besides all that I would like to congratulate Rizzoli and Gabriel with the new born daughter Regina. Liked those chapters where Gabriel, her colleagues and friends do everything they can to free her and others. The book was so good that I flew through it, read most of the chapters in one day.
