Book Excerpt:

Hi Kids,

My name is Sandy and I’m a yellow Labrador retriever. Most of the time, I’m a happy-go-lucky pup, but once in awhile, I feel lonely or grumpy, too. Just like you, I experience lots of different emotions (that’s a BIG word for feelings).

When I’m happy, I wag my tail and let out a soft ruff-ruff-ruff as if to say Let’s play! When I’m annoyed or frightened, I may grumble and growl, meaning Back off, buddy! Stay away!

My feline friend, Willow, likes to remind me that I’m not perfect, but I love her anyhow. And that’s why I’ve asked her to help me introduce you to my very favorite feeling words. I hope you’ll share them with your human family and, of course, your furry and feathered friends!

Love,

Sandy

I Have the Best Job in the World – I Draw Pictures All Day!

By Teri Rider

Byline:  Teri Rider is a Book Designer, Illustrator and Publisher. Learn more about Teri’s work at teririder.com.

As a children’s picture book illustrator, I often get images in my mind as soon as the author tells me the story the first time. If it captures my imagination and hooks me, my job is to then find a way to capture the imaginations of others and cause them to fall in love with the characters, too.

When Karen and I first met, we sat down for a long lunch and walked through the whole story. Because Karen was so passionate and had already done so much work on her story, by the end of that first meeting, we had almost all of the ideas for each drawing. On my four-hour train ride home from our meeting, I was so excited that I sketched the entire cover illustration. We ended up keeping many of those original ideas.

I love illustrating animals—especially dogs. Coming up with an illustration for the star of the story, Sandy—originally named Mr. Fluffy Pants—was probably the most challenging part. I did several sketches, mostly to determine just how fluffy he would be! Turns out, he wasn’t really all that fluffy and “he” became “she” and her name became Sandy, named after the “real” lovable Labrador retriever who is Karen’s sidekick in her read-to-a-dog and humane education programs. The name was perfect and right in front of us the whole time!

One other important step in the process of illustrating a children’s book is to do thumbnail sketches of the entire book. This way, we can see how the story flows from page to page and how the drawings look side by side when the book is open. These very simple sketches are then turned into full size line drawings.

For this book, I decided to do a combination of hand-drawn artwork, which I then scanned into Adobe Photoshop and colorized digitally.

Karen and I both really love Animals Have Feelings, Too! and we hope to create another book together next year. Be sure to follow our blog for updates on our next project!

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

Series Info:
This is the first part of the “Forever War” series, however it can be read as a standalone.

Book Description:
The Earth’s leaders have drawn a line in the interstellar sand—despite the fact that the fierce alien enemy that they would oppose is inscrutable, unconquerable, and very far away. A reluctant conscript drafted into an elite Military unit, Private William Mandella has been propelled through space and time to fight in the distant thousand-year conflict; to perform his duties without rancor and even rise up through military ranks. Pvt. Mandella is willing to do whatever it takes to survive the ordeal and return home. But “home” may be even more terrifying than battle, because, thanks to the time dilation caused by space travel, Mandella is aging months while the Earth he left behind is aging centuries.

An interesting idea about how using pulsars you could have interstellar travel but this option has one big minus. Each time travelling like that, although it might be just an eye blink for you, on Earth it might be some decades or even centuries.

When private William Mandella returns to Earth for time it’s year 2008; it’s very different from your eighth year and let’s just say that I’m not sad because of that. The society and circumstances are so incomprehensible for William and others who were lucky to survive, that the thought about returning to military starts to get tempting.

While William as fighting with aliens, Earth had its own wars and this time because of overpopulation and resources. In the result to be homosexual has become a norm and if you are heterosexual everyone thinks you are weird; plus there is a ‘’cure’’ for you. You could say that the situation is upside down. But the next time William will return to Earth it’s going to be the next millennium, and the situation previously could actually be called as reasonably good one.

The war with an alien race gets intertwined in the economy so much that soon enough most can’t imagine a world without it, as a result Forever War. It obviously helps that the fighting is not nearly close to Earth. But nothing lasts forever and ever, not even the Forever War, only the solution how that happened was a bit bizarre; the same I could say about epilogue.

Definitely a military sci-fi and if you don’t like that this book won’t be for you.

Tess Gerritsen – Ice Cold (Rizzoli & Isles #8)

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

New York Times” bestselling author Tess Gerritsen’s relentless, inventive novels take readers on pulse-racing thrill rides that are as satisfying as they are heart-stopping. Now, in this edge-of-your-seat suspense novel, a mysteriously isolated town stands abandoned as a silent watcher waits.
In Wyoming for a medical conference, Boston medical examiner Maura Isles joins a group of friends on a spur-of-the-moment ski trip. But when their SUV stalls on a snow-choked mountain road, they’re stranded with no help in sight.
As night falls, the group seeks refuge from the blizzard in the remote village of Kingdom Come, where twelve eerily identical houses stand dark and abandoned. Something terrible has happened in Kingdom Come: Meals sit untouched on tables, cars are still parked in garages. The town’s previous residents seem to have vanished into thin air, but footprints in the snow betray the presence of someone who still lurks in the cold darkness–someone who is watching Maura and her friends.
Days later, Boston homicide detective Jane Rizzoli receives the grim news that Maura’s charred body has been found in a mountain ravine. Shocked and grieving, Jane is determined to learn what happened to her friend. The investigation plunges Jane into the twisted history of Kingdom Come, where a gruesome discovery lies buried beneath the snow. As horrifying revelations come to light, Jane closes in on an enemy both powerful and merciless–and the chilling truth about Maura’s fate.

Alternatīvais nosaukums The Killing Place.

In its approach to  the crime and investigation Ice Cold in a good way is different from previous books in the series.

After another work related conference at Wyoming and disappointing phone call with Father Daniel Brophy, Maura agrees to go to a ski resort with an acquaintance from college, his daughter and two friends. But when the snow storm starts and weather gets horrible everything from good goes to bad and then worse. It proves that even being 100% optimist doesn’t help if someone shoots first and asks later.

When Maura doesn’t come back when she should and doesn’t answer to her calls, her friends and colleagues start to worry. Being representatives of law it’s easier for Jane and her husband FBI agent Gabriel Dean to advance the search. To Wyoming with them also go Daniel and Anthony Sansone from Mephisto Club.

At the beginning of the investigation almost everyone’s attention is to a religious commune. Although not without reason what dominates are stereotypes.

From other characters I would like to mention Julian Henry Perkins and his loyal dog Bear who have a very important role in the story after they meat Maura.

Most of the chapter are from POV of Maura; the situations and everything else reveals her other characteristic features. The book overall was much more psychologically powerful.

The alternative title for this book – The Killing Place.

Tess Gerritsen – Ice Cold (Rizzoli & Isles #8)

Kinds of Books You Won’t Read (kāda veida grāmatas Tu nelasi):

Longest Book You’ve Read (garākā grāmata, ko esi izlasījis/-usi):

Garāko, kuras nosaukumu atceros :D Kolīna Makkalova – Morgana ceļš, bet noteikti bijusi arī ap 1000 lappaspusēm.

Stephen King – Doctor Sleep (The Shining #2)

ZZZ-snatcher book (last book that kept you up WAY late) (grāmata, kas noturējusi nomodā ļoti ilgi):

Ilgi nakts stundās reti mēdzu lasīt, drīzāk varētu minēt grāmatu, kura izlasīta vienā vai gandrīz vienā paņēmienā; tā teikt page-turner. Piemēram, abas The Shining sērijas grāmatas.

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

FINAL STRAW (book 8 in the Urban Hunters series)

It was all so perfect, until the dark side of life paid Amber a visit. Now all she’s got is a bloodied pair of pink pyjamas and a cardboard box down a rat–infested alley.

Amber comes face to face with a cruel murderer in the bush. She must decide — kill him now or later?

And remain a victim at the hands of her mother, or fight for a life of her own?

Mana recenzija/My review

If Bowels of Hell tells us just a little about Amber then Final Straw is completely about her.

In the first chapters she’s only six years old but even then her dad Jim in his supervision allows her to do few things at the forge. We get a sight of Amber in a different light, much more skillful than you might think from previous books and her interaction with Billy. We have already witnessed her fighting skills and also how good she can be at hunting. That’s thanks to her dad’s interest in wrestling and hunting.

Unfortunately it can’t go on to be that good for too long and when Amber is twelve Jim is called in the army from reserves. Such news is a shock not only to Amber but also to her mother Narelle who managed to stay from bottle all these years during the story at least, but know she relapses.

Amber is forced to grow up and take uncharacteristic responsibilities for her age but her temper wouldn’t let her to do anything differently. Sadly, but difficulties for Amber doesn’t with that and life gives her new blows.

If at the beginning I was skeptic about the need of such backstory, but after I have read there is no doubt left.

Gary Taaffe – Bowels of Hell (Urban Hunters #7)

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

BOWELS OF HELL (book 7)

Entombed and doomed to digestion down the bowels of hell itself, Billy and Amber must escape or die.

The orphans, abandoned again, must set aside their differences and put into practice what Billy has taught them. Or starve.

And is the honeymoon over already? Can the Bullies save their relationship with Mel?

“It’s really clever. Very exciting. I love the way you’ve ended it.” Jack, Australia

“One minute his chilling descriptions are giving me the shivers and the next, I’m laughing out loud!” Ethan, USA

URBAN HUNTERS is laugh–out–loud, gut–churning, heart–wrenching storytelling at its best. Unlike anything you’ve ever read, in typical Taaffe fashion. Hilarious as usual. Always surprising. Wonderful!

Mana recenzija/My review

After sneaking away from the camp while others sleep, Amber and Billy get themselves in a really tight and life threatening spot, literally bowels of hell (at least the smell might be). Luckily everything ends well.

At camp continues daily activities, and Billy together with Amber are still helping them to learn what’s around them. What I liked that in this story has a bit of that humour as in the first books. This time we learn a little about Amber before she met Billy, but only a little.

The ending confirmed my biggest prognosis regarding kids, Billy and Amber.
