***************************************

Gabriella Woods or just Gabi find a matchbook with a logo of some club in her fiancée Lawrence’s pocket. Lately he has started to stay longer at work and come home late at night. Also Gabi feels bored and unappreciated in this relationship, which only adds to her doubts that Lawrence might not be loyal to them. Those then are the reasons why Gabi goes to the club to find out herself, but she just can’t imagine what kind of mischievous things and experiences this visit and the meeting with its owner Darion Milano will trigger.

Darion accordingly to the genre has a sixpack and his looks are just stunning. However emotionally it’s a bit more complicated. Divorce from his now ex-wife Eva saying lightly wasn’t friendly, and I should add that Eva owns half of the club which creates more tension and keeps her in the bigger picture.

If did believe that Darion is a club owner and a partier then not so much about Gabriella’s profession. She is an editor at the publishing company but in the whole book I didn’t sense her passion towards literature; maybe those are just my stereotypes.

The second half of the book for my liking was better because more attention was directed at relationship between the main characters while in the first half there was almost one sex scene after another. I guess it wouldn’t be a big deal for me to reveal that the relationship between Gabi and Lawrence doesn’t end well.

All in all I wouldn’t say no to the opportunity to read next installments in this trilogy. : )

Joprojām ik pa brīdim kāds labs komentārs no Heizalas puses no kāda nezināma brīža nākotnē. : )

***************************************

Marko and Alana still must worry about their and the Hazel’s safety but now they are not alone. Together with them are their daughter’s grandparents, and that creates some interesting situations as they try to comprehend their son’s choices.

In the first moments Marko’s mother with magic sends away Izabel, ghost/Hazel’s babysitter, to a planet, and then the resultant adventures because of that; a special plus to the giant.

For the time we get to see Gwendolyn and it’s clear that she isn’t happy that Marko left her and won’t accept that. We still see few comments from Hazel from unknown time in the future. : )

I liked the flashback of how Marko and Alana met and eventually ran away. The art probably would be even more impressive in a physical edition.

From where he was flying, Josh could see the other red-tiled rooftops of Sand Pit, between the identical rooftops of Palm Frond Majesty and the Weeping Miner, and other housing developments with elaborate names and houses failing to live up to them, and just down the way the strip mall with Big Rico’s Pizza and Carlos’s lab, and beyond that City Hall, draped in black velvet for the night, and a young woman walking to her car, Mayor Cardinal, yes, but also Dana again for the night, going to meet her recently cured brother for a celebratory dinner at Tourniquet, and beyond that the tall black walls of the forbidden Dog Park, and, in the parking lot of the Desert Flower Bowling Alley and Arcade Fun Complex, Cecil from the radio station and Carlos the scientist with bowling bags in one hand and the other’s hand in the other, strolling inside for League Night, a kiss before they opened the door and then they were gone, and beyond that the Moonlite All-Nite Diner, which, true to its name, was as busy then as it was at any other hour, with Laura offering fruit from the gnarled branches of her body and Steve Carlsberg digging heartily into a slice of invisible pie, and beyond that Diane’s old office, full of computers and tables where work could be done although no one knew why they did it, where Catharine had stayed late to finish up some work at a desk which was tarantula-free, although she still flinched at imagined light touches on her hand, and beyond that the low bulk of the public library, outwardly quiet, quietly seething with librarians, and near that his own house, which was just now thinking of him, and where a faceless old woman was secretly refolding all of his clothes, and beyond that the Night Vale Daily Journal building, whose sole occupant was considering a wall of hatchets, ready to get down to the bloody business of local journalism, and beyond that the movie theater, its blinking lights showing through the sentient haze of Stacy as she prepped the box office for the midnight movie audiences, silent customers who fade into being in their seats at exactly midnight, watching movies that play on the screen even with the projector shut off, before fading back away into nothing without even waiting for the ending credits to finish, and beyond that the hole in the vacant lot out back of the Ralphs, and the Ralphs itself, offering fresh food and low, low prices, although never at the same time, and beyond that Old Woman Josie outside her house, no paper in her hand, and Erika, and Erika, and Erika as well, all outside in the garden, and the tower of Night Vale Community Radio, blinking light atop, and Jackie’s Pawn Shop, formerly Lucinda’s Pawn Shop, a place that was just then closed, that was now closed more often than it wasn’t because its owner wanted to be somewhere else sometimes, and the windows of the hospital, doctors flitting from one to the next in an unexplained instant, and the car lot where used car salesmen loped joyfully over their car-strewn territory, barking at a moon that they did not understand but then no one else did really, and the Brown Stone Spire, ancient and humming a malevolent tone, and a cordon of helpful helicopters keeping everyone free, and out past all of that the sand, a small eternity of sand, desert like there would never be anything else, and beyond that, eventually, something else, because there is always something else, and King City, no longer forgotten, an ordinary town, with an ordinary mayor, who was just then taking off his jacket, a man in a short-sleeve shirt holding a deerskin suitcase, and stepping into his house where a family greeted him with his correct name at last, and beyond it and around it all other ordinary towns, and all ordinary people, who were sleeping or not sleeping, who were metaphorically or literally alive, or metaphorically or literally not, gone but alive in our hearts, or gone and forgotten, all existing somewhere on a spectrum of loss, and beyond them and around them the oceans and forests, momentarily teeming with life before the great planetary hush, and out beyond that a sky that was coming around slowly to the idea of sunset, or was, somewhere else, just having the first thought of day, and beyond that the wavering red lights of spy satellites, watching, and the steady blue lights of unidentified spacecraft, watching, and the white light of what we mistakenly assume is the moon, watching, and beyond that void, and void after that, void on and on, with a scattered vanishing of non-void mixed in, and beyond that so many mysteries that it didn’t seem to Josh that he would be able to solve even one of them, not if he had all the time in the world, and he didn’t have all the time in the world, and he would never solve even one mystery.

Joseph Fink, Jeffrey Cranor – Welcome to Night Vale

23129410

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

From the creators of the wildly popular Welcome to Night Valepodcast comes an imaginative mystery of appearances and disappearances that is also a poignant look at the ways in which we all struggle to find ourselves…no matter where we live.

Located in a nameless desert somewhere in the great American Southwest, Night Vale is a small town where ghosts, angels, aliens, and government conspiracies are all commonplace parts of everyday life. It is here that the lives of two women, with two mysteries, will converge.

Nineteen-year-old Night Vale pawn shop owner Jackie Fierro is given a paper marked “King City” by a mysterious man in a tan jacket holding a deer skin suitcase. Everything about him and his paper unsettles her, especially the fact that she can’t seem to get the paper to leave her hand, and that no one who meets this man can remember anything about him. Jackie is determined to uncover the mystery of King City and the man in the tan jacket before she herself unravels.

Night Vale PTA treasurer Diane Crayton’s son, Josh, is moody and also a shape shifter. And lately Diane’s started to see her son’s father everywhere she goes, looking the same as the day he left years earlier, when they were both teenagers. Josh, looking different every time Diane sees him, shows a stronger and stronger interest in his estranged father, leading to a disaster Diane can see coming, even as she is helpless to prevent it.

Diane’s search to reconnect with her son and Jackie’s search for her former routine life collide as they find themselves coming back to two words: “King City”. It is King City that holds the key to both of their mysteries, and their futures…if they can ever find it.

Mana recenzija (pārdomas)/My (thoughts) review

Welcome to Night Vale brīžiem ir gan komfortabls bezsakars, gan dažu šermuļu uzdzenošs.

***************************************

Jackie Fierro runs a pawn shop where for everything she offers the same price $11 or something less usual. Jackie has a feeling that she has been in charge of shop for decades if not even a good century but at the same time Jackie is only 19 years old. While Jackie’s friends are getting older she always shrugs off the question of when she will just turn twenty. The time in Night Vale really goes differently. Things get more strange when a man possibly named Evan, that most after seeing him can’t remember, gives her a paper with two words on it – King City. Whatever Jackie would do, throw it away as far as she can or anything else, the paper always returns in her hand.

Another person trying to find out more about King City is Diane Crayton, but for Diane the reasons differ. Diane one day starts to see her shapeshifting son Josh’s father Troy, who left them soon after he was born, but every time Diane wants to stop him and talk to him, he manages to get away. The relationship between mother and son cannot be called as something very good, and you can sympathize with the mother when Josh starts to ask questions more and more about his father.

After few time running into each other Jackie and Diane decide to team up in both – trying to understand what is King City and trying to get there. It might sound weird but if I had to choose where to live between Night Vale and King City, I would choose Night Vale. At least while Troy is at King City; one man with many I, literally a split personalities.

Welcome to Night Vale sometimes is comfortable nonsense combined with alien nonsense. A place where being an intern at the radio station or going to library can end up with your death. If you get out of a library alive you definitely can consider yourself a very lucky person. If someone says that you have a migraine, but your head doesn’t hurt, check your neck, you might find a scorpion! Also, please don’t ignore the faceless lady in the attick! :D And, whatever you do, DON’T touch pink plastic flamingoes!

It took me a while to get used to the style of writing and language, and the parts with Cecil and his radio show really helped; reminded me the podcast. I could say that those parts are one of the best thing in the whole book but it’s good that it’s not all the time because that would be a different book, better to restart listening to podcast. If you haven’t heard anything about Welcome to Night Vale I would recommend to listen to few episodes before reading this book.

And, of course, all hail the mighty Glow Cloud!

Mary Shelley – Frankenstein (Audiobook)

15994485

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

Mary Shelley began writing Frankenstein when she was only eighteen. At once a Gothic thriller, a passionate romance, and a cautionary tale about the dangers of science, Frankenstein tells the story of committed science student Victor Frankenstein. Obsessed with discovering the cause of generation and life and bestowing animation upon lifeless matter, Frankenstein assembles a human being from stolen body parts but; upon bringing it to life, he recoils in horror at the creature’s hideousness. Tormented by isolation and loneliness, the once-innocent creature turns to evil and unleashes a campaign of murderous revenge against his creator, Frankenstein.

Frankenstein, an instant best-seller and an important ancestor of both the horror and science fiction genres, not only tells a terrifying story, but also raises profound, disturbing questions about the very nature of life and the place of humankind within the cosmos: What does it mean to be human? What responsibilities do we have to each other? How far can we go in tampering with Nature? In our age, filled with news of organ donation genetic engineering, and bio-terrorism, these questions are more relevant than ever.

Mana recenzija (pārdomas)/My (thoughts) review

***************************************

Finally I pushed myself to listen Frankenstein after I had seen the theatre play (music was fantastic!). I guess my audio book’s copy is a much shortened version of the book itself, so without seeing the mentioned play I think it would be harder for me to make sense of what did happen. Therefore I can’t say goodbye to Frankenstein yet!

So Victor Frankenstein wanted to find out what makes life and what detaches a dead thing from a living person that he dedicated himself to studying medicine and experiments. Unfortunately immediately after reviving the Creature Victor feels horribly about what he has done, the ugliness of it and feels disgusted, but what can you wish for if you put the Creature together from many human parts instead of reviving a whole person.

Of course you can discuss how people don’t like everything that’s different and that’s why they attack to those who stand out or aren’t the ‘’norm’’, which in the Creatures case creates a very aggressive opposite reaction. Definitely someone else instead of revenge might react by closing of from others and the world, or even hurting themselves.

Without doubt to its time this book is very good from which others later have inspired from. You might say that the Creature could be a living dead/zombie.
