WHAT EVERYONE IS SAYING ABOUT HIS CONFESSION:

His Confession was a surprisingly engaging read with believable characters who were easy to connect with.It dealt with subjects a little different to what I’m used to, but the author did a great job of pulling me into her world.” – Mia Hoddell, YA/NA author.

”His Confession pulled me through from the first paragraph! The enigmatic Darion practically leapt off the pages and I could picture his every move and facial expression clear as day in my head! This story is definitely one to add to your “want-to-read” list-especially if you love a captivating plot as well as scenes so hot that they fog up your glasses. I don’t want to say too much and spoil it for future readers but DARION and GABI put Christian and Ana to SHAME! Enough said. LOL.”  – Kiarra M. Taylor, contemporary romance author of THE QUARTER CHANGE.

”I loved it and I’m excited to read more to find out what happens. Darion is a great guy who was hurt badly and doesn’t know how to handle, which in steps Gabi. Love love love her! Hopefully she fights for him! When does the next book come out, as I’m dying to know what comes next! I also hope the girls get their own stories.”  – Susan Flynn, Beta reader Writers club.

”S. Valentine does an exquisite job at creating a dynamic between two characters, both from different worlds, that goes beyond a physical attraction.

His Confession is book one in The Black Door Trilogy. It is a fast paced story that is full of hotness and anticipation that heats you up from your head to your toes. Gabi, is tired of always playing it safe. Darion, has demons that he can no longer control.

When these two get together, boundaries are pushed, control is tested and emotions run wild.”  – AV. Scott, author of High Heels & New York.

A brilliant book which leaves you wondering what happened in Darion’s past that has left him so wary and so afraid to put himself and his heart out there not to mention to put his faith and trust in Gabi, the one woman whose managed to penetrate the walls he’s built.

I can’t wait for book 2 and I’m hoping that Darion and Gabi can overcome the obstacles that stand in front of them, including Eva, Darion’s ex wife.”  – Rebecca Barber, author Nobody’s Obligation.

Nora Ikstena – Mātes piens (’’Mēs. Latvija, XX gadsimts’’ #9)

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

Mana recenzija (pārdomas)/My (thoughts) review

***************************************

The story about mother and daughter’s relationship in the last two decades of Soviet Union. The daughter is born when the mother is 25 years old, but unfortunately there are no big motherly feelings at the beginning. The POV changes between these two main characters all the time which gives us a chance to hear mother’s side of story and viewpoint.

Several times it’s mentioned that mother feels like in a cage and that the time and place she has been born into confines her and limits what she could be and do. Unfortunately to fight back she rather lets the pressure affect her, but that’s not without any reasons. Mother works in the field of medicine, with fertility. Considering this her time in Leningrad has stayed in mind where she successfully makes an artificial insemination but instead of being rewarded she is accused of interfering in the work of God and that pretty much stops her carrier growth. At least she is allowed to work at some ambulatory care clinic where the unending clients that want abortion gives her depressive thoughts no matter how good she is at that and how much they thank her later. Add to that painful childhood memories of losing the father at the time of regime changes and no wonder about how her state now.

I had a bit of lack of understanding why in so many other reviews the mother was portrayed so badly in the relationship with her daughter. Of course she is far from perfect and thanks God (just an expression) that a big part in daughter’s life plays her grandparents (mother’s mother and stepfather). When daughter grows up she becomes a big support and an encouragement for mother to hang on to life, but things start to change when daughter must go to Riga to live with her grandparents because of the school. At least mother doesn’t stay completely alone.

The differences between mother and daughter are like between night and day. The complications start to rise when the stuff that daughter is taught at school and in its program starts to differ from what she hears at home. A special happiness she receives from culture history hobby group, but unfortunately that doesn’t last forever.

Just few characters have names and I have to agree that that gives an impression about people as one  big and giant mass not individualities.

Since my own time at high school and history classes, which I liked very much, a good time has passed and some things obviously are forgotten. That’s why this book hopefully can encourage me to change that. I guess this could be a great book also for those who have experienced that time themselves. The book concludes with a sense of oncoming freedom and at the very last scene where our main characters can’t believe their eyes when they watch TV and see the moment of Berlin’s wall falling.

Mana recenzija (pārdomas)/My (thoughts) review

Cita sižeta līnija ietver Gvendolinu, Sofiju, The Lying Cat un The Brand (The Will māsa) viņu centienos atrast īpašu pretlīdzekli, lai glābtu The Will.

***************************************

The recent events with robot Dengo who seeks the help from the wrong people thereby endangering those near him, by kidnapping Hazel (also Alana and Klara) and the royal robot baby at least for this moment unites characters, Marko and Prince Robot IV, that at different circumstances would be enemies which creates few unusual moments.

The other story line involves Gwendolyn, Sophie, The Lying Cat and The Brand (sister of The Will) as they try to find a cure for The Will. In this and also in the two previously mentioned story lines some serious topics are discussed, like about family, sacrifices and selflessness we are ready to for the people that are important to us.

In this volume there are plenty of shocking moments, and mostly they involved a dramatic passing of some character. Which is one of the reasons (without doubt also the art) why also Volume 5 receives the max rating from me. Now that I have read the last available volume out there I can’t wait for the sixth volume to come out! : )

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate the planet while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded on Mars’ surface, completely alone, with no way to signal Earth that he’s alive — and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone years before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark’s not ready to quit. Armed with nothing but his ingenuity and his engineering skills — and a gallows sense of humor that proves to be his greatest source of strength – he embarks on a dogged quest to stay alive, using his botany expertise to grow food and even hatching a mad plan to contact NASA back on Earth.

As he overcomes one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next, Mark begins to let himself believe he might make it off the planet alive – but Mars has plenty of surprises in store for him yet.

Grounded in real, present-day science from the first page to the last, yet propelled by a brilliantly ingenious plot that surprises the reader again and again, The Martian is a truly remarkable thriller: an impossible-to-put-down suspense novel that manages to read like a real-life survival tale.

Mana recenzija (pārdomas)/My (thoughts) review

***************************************

Mark Watney wakes up with an antenna in his body and all alone on the red planet. But the circumstances don’t allow him to just sit around and be terrified but forces this botanist and engineer to think all the time how to stay alive as long as possible, preferably until Ares 4 arrives.

I completely believed to what happened in The Martian. When I recently saw a documentary about the difficulties to send humans to Mars I had just two advices 1) read The Martian and/or 2) ask Andy. :D

Not only Mark’s POV was interesting (his attitude and humor did crack some smiles and few laughs but no ROFL moments) but also how everyone else reacted on Earth. Mass media and people show a massive interest and concern about Mark’s future, different organizations, the government and other involved in the universe’s exploration are willing to help NASA (also internally)not only with finances but also with their own personal time (forgetting what a normal sleep means). Andy Weir’s scenario in this case is positive but I can imagine that that might not always be like that.

A warning that further it’s revealed if Mark survives or not!

It’s actually better that the book ends with Mark getting safely to Hermes and that there isn’t even a little about him back on Earth. Probably there would be more than one that wouldn’t be happy about the spent money just to save one person and would somehow express it. However it might be fun to find out how Mark adapts from being the last person on a planet being back to Earth, of course he would have practice time on Hermes. I can imagine that at least at the beginning Mark would receive huge attention from press and have some popularity.

Simplifying, the story is about how one man against all odds and reasonable chances survives unimaginable difficulties and sometimes his own thoughtlessness and stays alive.

Mana recenzija (pārdomas)/My (thoughts) review

Lai gan sākums šķita potenciāli labs, jau apmēram no vidus grāmata sāka lejupslīdi, turklāt beigas neradīja pabeigtības sajūtu, un, ka kaut kas atrisinājumam pietrūkst.

Visvairāk ieinteresēja meitenītes Nelas piedzīvojumi, kuri lielākā daļa norit tādā kā interaktīvā pasaku grāmatā. Īpaša tā ar to, ka teksts un darbība attīstās to lasot un ir katram individuāla, kā arī šajā procesā piedalās aktieri kā citi tēli. Cik sapratu, pati Nela to neapzinās.

***************************************

Although the beginning was promising already the book started its nose-dive(?).  Plus the ending had a felt incomplete and unfinished.

The most interesting story line was about little Nell and her adventures as most of the time she interacts with her play book. The special thing is the text and action evolves as you read it and is different for everyone, also there are actors the play other characters. If I understood correctly, Nell doesn’t know that.

Considering this, good discussions could be about virtual realities but more likely thinking about video games and Oculus Rift than books. I doubt anything like that would be that soon also in literature and books.

Unfortunately the rest didn’t catch my interest that much. It seemed that bunch ideas are thrown together and what you have is just a bad mix. Everything gets even more confusing as all the new terminology and technologies are presented without much explanation.

This is the second book I have listened to by Neal Stephenson. Maybe I just haven’t found the right one or even that this author’s style isn’t for me.

Hotel Transylvania 2
