Poyo!

Kamēr Tonijs atgūstas no pēdējiem notikumiem un pats cīnās palīkt dzīvo pasaulē, notikumi turpina ritēt spraigi. Tāpēc šoreiz esam vairāk kopā ar Tonija dvīņu māsu, kuru atpazīst aģents Cēzars (turpina sazināties ar Meisonu), bet viņa pati mēģina to noliegt. Diemžēl beigās pamats nelielām bēdām.

Poyo! Now that’s an animal! And now my favorite character in this series. Between chapters/issues there’s an interlude just for him showing how Poyo managed to stay alive and that even the king of hell and everyone in there can’t keep him down there.

We know that in the world of Chew chicken meat is illegal because of the recent bird flu, but for resourceful people that’s no obstacle because you can always create a mix breed between chicken and frogs. :D

While Tony recovers from the recent events and fights to stay alive himself, everything keeps going tensely. That’s why this time we are following Tony’s twin sister, and agent Caesar Valenzano, who keeps to cooperate with Mason, recognizes her although she tries to deny that. Unfortunately the ending gives you a good reason for little mourning.

Cīņu simulāciju spēļu ainas bija vienas no interesantākajām visā grāmatā.

For a long time because of some mysterious reasons I always put down this audiobook and choose another. I had heard about author’s controversial opinions and world view. Also I saw the movie when it was on the big screen; what surprised me that that helped to enjoy the book even more.

So, Andrew Wiggin or just Ender only at the age of 6 is recruited to a military training so that he and others would be ready to fight buggers later. Soon enough it is clear that Ender is very talented and his importance cannot be overrated. The attitude from teachers also is different with relative help.

The main part of the training is a military style game usually between two teams. The fight simulation games were one of the interesting parts of entire book. Besides the game takes place in zero gravitation to help you to think accurately and not everyone is capable. The reason that Ender is so good makes him a target following with physical and psychological attacks from others. I doubt that without such treatment he wouldn’t be capable to do what he had to.

I still believe that using voluntaries 75 years old and older giving them a second chance is much better. But the logic behind training kids at such an early age that being so young it’s easier to influence them, plus their attachment to the Earth isn’t that great if at all.

Even without seeing the movie, the outcome of war between two races isn’t hard to guess. The reason why there was this battle, mere language barrier, makes you think how much impact that has in different situations. Hopefully this year I will have a chance to continue this series and also Shadow Saga.

Interesants pavērsiens izmeklēšanā, īpatnējs auglis, kas pēc pagatavošanas garšo identiski kā vista, aizved Toniju uz vienu no Mikronēzijas salām, kuras pārvaldība, šķiet, nav no tām demokrātiskākajām, pie reizes.

… wow!

An interesting turn in the case, a peculiar fruit which after it’s been cooked tastes just like chicken, brings Tony to one of Micronesia’s island, whose governor doesn’t seem to be on the side of democracy.

… just wow! If I said that Vol.1 wasn’t that gory and bloody then in this volume the action has been turned up a notch. There are few new characters introduced to the story, also a supernatural aspect is added if the food thing wasn’t enough.

Tony receives a new/old partner. It seems that I won’t need to complain for the lack of jokes and humour. And for the intrigue, Mason was mentioned but only briefly; his involvement looks a bit bigger.

Stephen King – Doctor Sleep (The Shining #2)

17666439

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

Stephen King returns to the characters and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance (the boy protagonist of The Shining) and the very special twelve-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals.

On highways across America, a tribe of people called The True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless—mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and spunky twelve-year-old Abra Stone learns, The True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the “steam” that children with the “shining” produce when they are slowly tortured to death.

Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant “shining” power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.”

Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of devoted readers of The Shining and satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon.

If before reading this book I had some worries that Doctor Sleep might not be as good as The Shining then already in the first few chapters they are far gone and you can just be happy meeting  again Danny, know Dan, but for me still Danny or later in the book Doctor Sleep.

Unfortunately the shining doesn’t make Danny’s life easy but depressive and despite his experience as how alcohol affected his father that is his exact choice as how to suppress his skill. And it seems that drinking wasn’t the only thing that he inherited from his dad, it’s also the temper and how easy he can get angry.

Everything starts to change for good when Danny in his wandering arrives in small town in which he will find a good and important friend, Billy. Also it helps when he joins AA. The events in Doctor Sleep happen in 15 year time span. As it is mentioned in the synopsis Danny meets Abra who’s shining is much greater than even his. Their first interaction is already when Abra is just a baby. It’s not very easy for Abra’s parents and her pediatrician John Dalton.

Some excitement is added thanks to creatures that could be compared to vampires; they live off the shining or as they call it steam. Their name for themselves is True Knot. Rose O’Hara or Rose the Hat is their leader, she and some other members are old as humanity itself; once they were many but nowadays it’s only her group. When the end for True Knot is almost tangible, Abra becomes Rose’s obsession. But the biggest problems come from underestimating the opponent.

Meeting Abra face to face and the coming events, including eventual visit to a camp ground which once was the place for Overlook hotel, is a major test for Danny’s sanity and temptations.

Not always there has to be a blood bath for good horror and creepiness!

A blessed event becomes a nightmare for pregnant homicide detective Jane Rizzoli when she finds herself on the wrong side of a hostage crisis in this timely and relentless new thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of Body Double.

A nameless, beautiful woman appears to be just another corpse in the morgue. An apparent suicide, she lies on a gurney, awaiting the dissecting scalpel of medical examiner Maura Isles. But when Maura unzips the body bag and looks down at the body, she gets the fright of her life. The corpse opens its eyes.

Who is this violent, desperate soul, and what does she want? As the tense hours tick by, Maura joins forces with Jane’s husband, FBI agent Gabriel Dean, to track down the mysterious killer’s identity. Pagājis aptuveni mēnesis kopš Body Double beigām, un Ridzoli kuru katru brīdi var sākties dzemdības. Kur viņai tāda ‘’veiksme’’, ka tieši attiecīgajā dienā kļūst par ķīlnieci slimnīcā. Nodaļas līdz attiecīgajam momentam arī ļoti labas – teiksim tā, reizēm arī miroņi pamostas.

Ik pa brīdim atskats pagātnē no Milas skatpunkta(tagadnes stāstā ienāk vēlāk).

Ķīlnieku krīze saceļ kājās bezmaz visus Bostonas žurnālistus, bet viens no viņiem, Pīters Lūkass, uzskata, ka sava darba godīga pildīšana nav pietiekama.

It’s been about a month since Body Double ending and it’s time when the labour for Rizzoli could start any moment now. How ‘’lucky’’ you have to be that in the exact day you become a hostage in the hospital. Chapters leading to that moment are very good – let’s just say that sometimes dead people might wake up.

From time to time there are flashbacks from POV of Mila (she comes into the present story later). Together with her is one of hostage takers Olena. Hoping for American dream girls from East Europe goes over the ocean with the promise of a job but can’t imagine what kind of job it will be. You might think slavery doesn’t exist anymore and definitely not in the USA, but in this books they become sex slaves. Environment that these girls are force to live in are just horrible. One night Mila and Olena are really lucky escaping that place and sure death (at that moment). That event brings them together with Joe. Many times on CNN I have seen documentaries about this problem.

The hostage crisis assembles almost all Boston journalists as everyone tries to understand what’s happening. But one of them, Peter Lukas, thinks that what he receives for his job isn’t enough. Again I have to think how statistically probable is the chance before the crisis when Maura Isles trusted exactly to him to tell the story about what happened in morgue.

I would say that Vanish could be separated in two parts; the second would be after the hostages are freed. Unfortunately for Olena and Joe it doesn’t end well but until the moment all hell breaks loose they, especially Joe, sounded like pure conspirators, like that the big corporations actually control the country.

They are not that far from truth, only in this case it’s about abusing power trying to cover up what you have done.

Besides all that I would like to congratulate Rizzoli and Gabriel with the new born daughter Regina. Liked those chapters where Gabriel, her colleagues and friends do everything they can to free her and others. The book was so good that I flew through it, read most of the chapters in one day.

Aborigine boy Billy from time to time gets tricked by his older brother Pindaari and Mallee, so he decides that it’s time for good payback and a prank of his own.

The first chapters where more serious introducing characters and also telling about historical relationships between aborigines and white people. Billy grew up without his mother because she died giving birth, and besides his brothers and father the closest relationship he has with his grandfather Cobar who introduces him with ancestral customs and knowledge. But it hasn’t been easy for the tribe either when there has been times when they could be called a clan because of how many they were.

But the concluding chapters were hilarious and purely awesome! : )

Author’s introduction in the beginning explaining how the book was written and a bit the need for sequels, and also about the movie and its differences with the book was helpful and interesting giving an insight behind the pages.

The introduction of the story itself happens three million years ago when ancestors of man probably not really knowing encountered with aliens. Also in this part there is a captivating character – an early leader, Moon-Watcher.

A catalyst for space odyssey is a discovery of extraordinary and buried artefact on Moon. As it is about three millions it is clear that humans didn’t put it there. When the Sun light reaches this device it emits a signal. This discovery alone is a proof good enough to reconsider significance of mankind and realise that at least once humans weren’t alone in the Universe.

Frank Poole and Dave Bowman and three others in the cryogenic sleep make the team of Space Oddysey. An AI HAL 9000 runs the ship, and there’s even a good and a little scary uprising but not that much as the AI isn’t given such a long time to run wild. But the reason for such actions is quite simple as no one didn’t try to explain it that by shutting it off he doesn’t die (I think).

I liked that in those fragments when the ship received messages from Earth etc they used voices/sound effects like when a plane’s pilot speaks with passengers or something like that : )

Near the Saturn Dave encounters something similar like stargate and what he sees next might take the breath away. Only those who put the artefact on the Moon and that stargate are nowhere to be seen; perhaps mankind were just a bit too late to explore the vast Universe.

Prognoze par to, ka Deklanam Heilam ilgi miers netiks likts, izrādījās precīza.

My prognosis that Declan Hale won’t left alone was correct. Someone or more precisely something tries to get Declan’s attention with gruesome murders. In this way he gets acquainted with detectives Sam Grey and Annie Brie. But it will be Annie that will receive an important role next to Declan.

Since for Annie everything supernatural and magical is new there are more explanations than in the first book of the series. But I have to admit that I was surprised how fast Annie digested the new information. Meanwhile Sophie and Ethan are pushed aside and appear in the story just barely

Turns out that this something is an Emissary sent by Everlasting or gods and this time it’s Scion. Just few months after the first time Declan has to break his exile once again to go to Knights Infernal HQ. There he is promised unexpected reward but only if he manages to kill Emissary, but of course there’s a catch.

Wonderful journey through different worlds. I also enjoyed existent humour which effectively managed to ease the tension even in quite bloody and grim moments.

I would give relationship of Declan and Annie, although she is engaged but who knows, a long life ;)

If I would be one of those that rereads then probably I might give the third book a higher rating than I did, which was 3 stars.

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

Four United States presidents have been assassinated — in 1865, 1881, 1901, and 1963 — each murder seemingly unrelated and separated by time.

But what if those presidents were all killed for the same reason: a clause in the United States Constitution — contained within Article 1, Section 8 — that would shock Americans?

This question is what faces former Justice Department operative Cotton Malone in his latest adventure. When a bold assassination attempt is made against President Danny Daniels in the heart of Manhattan, Malone risks his life to foil the killing — only to find himself at dangerous odds with the Commonwealth, a secret society of pirates first assembled during the American Revolution. In their most perilous exploit yet, Malone and Cassiopeia Vitt race across the nation and take to the high seas. Along the way they break a secret cipher originally possessed by Thomas Jefferson, unravel a mystery concocted by Andrew Jackson, and unearth a centuries-old document forged by the Founding Fathers themselves, one powerful enough — thanks to that clause in the Constitution — to make the Commonwealth unstoppable.

Kopš prīkvela notikumiem ‘’The Devil’s Gold’’ Džonatans Vaiats laikam pazaudēja savu lielo apņemšanos izrēķināties ar Malonu.

What if all assassinations of the USA presidents are linked and not just separated events. The 7th book in Cotton Malone series gives this theory a chance.

Commonwealth is organization where descendants of pirates that once in the past operated as privateers to attack enemies of USA and deserves some gratitude as they helped in countries foundation and also in later military conflicts. But after the first attack to president in 19th century which was unsuccessful the president of that time makes certain that the pages of Congress Journal about passing out letter of marque to the ancestors of remaining four captains of Commonwealth. More than 175 the Jefferson Key has been doing its job to hide those two pages.

Since the events of ‘’The Devil’s Gold’’ it seems that Jonathan Wyatt has lost his resolve to have his revenge to Cotton Malone. Although it’s possible that he understood consequences of his earlier carrier decisions. But because of him Malone and also Cassiopeia is involved into this adventure. Both of them are only starting to comprehend what their relationship really means.

Few surprises and some intrigue comes from White House which could possibly destroy current president’s Danny Daniels reputation and would force him to respect Commonwealth.

Once again amazing journey and adventure with Cotton Malone and just as good descriptions of places.

Probably those who have read Stephen King’s book about 1963 could tell if my suspicions that Commonwealth is fiction which Steve Berry confirms, and that in that story there are no pirates.

Despite that Malone has retired from active duty and become a book seller this in a short time is his third adventure. As well as previously also this time he receives help from Stephanie, Henrik and Cassiopeia.

If in the first two books of the series it was about purely material values and also important, valuable information than in ‘’Venetian Betrayal’’ tells about exciting and without doubt very dangerous search for last resting place of Alexandrian the Great. But besides of his body there’s a possibility to find mysterious draught which after historical sources has an ability to cure diseases.

There are parties that would like to use the findings to realize their selfish and vicious plans. Supreme Ministers of Central Asian Federation Irina Zovastina could be villain of this book. She remains in power with cruel strength. In a short time she was able to unite several countries into one but she doesn’t plan to stop with that and she is ready to kill millions. Irina is obsessed with Ancient Greece and especially Alexander the Great. Other character that is portrayed as a villain is Rico Vincenti. His role is connected with the draught but actually he is motivated by noble purpose. Just with innocent want to get even wealthier along the way. The draught (bacteria) is so powerful that it can cure HIV and AIDS; only if that would be true in a real life not just in this book. : )

As this the third in this series then I liked that author allows the reader to get to know the main characters more closely. Although there are facts that are repeated in each book.

If revelation of the real fact were disappointing in the second book then this time it had opposite effect. I’m too fascinated by the history about Alexander and successful military leaders in general like Attila.
