Alfred Bester – The Stars My Destination (Audio book)

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

In this pulse-quickening novel, Alfred Bester imagines a future in which people “jaunte” a thousand miles with a single thought, where the rich barricade themselves in labyrinths and protect themselves with radioactive hit men – and where an inarticulate outcast is the most valuable and dangerous man alive. The Stars My Destination is a classic of technological prophecy and timeless narrative enchantment by an acknowledged master of science fiction.

Greg Bear – Eon (The Way #1) (audiobook)

840278

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

The 21st century was on the brink of nuclear confrontation when the 300 kilometer-long stone flashed out of nothingness and into Earth’s orbit. NASA, NATO, and the UN sent explorers to the asteroid’s surface…and discovered marvels and mysteries to drive researchers mad.

For the Stone was from space–but perhaps not our space; it came from the future–but perhaps not our future; and within the hollowed asteroid was Thistledown. The remains of a vanished civilization. A human–English, Russian, and Chinese-speaking–civilization. Seven vast chambers containing forests, lakes, rivers, hanging cities…

And museums describing the Death; the catastrophic war that was about to occur; the horror and the long winter that would follow. But while scientists and politicians bickered about how to use the information to stop the Death, the Stone yielded a secret that made even Earth’s survival pale into insignificance.

Mana recenzija (pārdomas)/My (thoughts) review

Debesīs ne no kurienes pēkšņi uzrodas milzīgs akmens, un lielvalstis katra sūta savus cilvēkus augšā to izpētīt.

Iespējams, autors iedvesmojies no Kubas raķešu krīzes.

Arī no tēliem, izņemot Patrīciju, neviens īsti neizcēlās.

Suddenly out of nowhere in the skies appears a big Stone and each superpower sends their own team up to inspect it. Unfortunately instead of combining their power and knowledge to better explore the Stone, division and power struggle not only remains but escalates even farther.

The ideas about where the Stone has come from are many. But one thing is clear, it is from future, because in one of the chambers they find a library with texts from 2010. :O The question is, is it from our world’s and dimension’s future? Will the new information about the future events change the course of our time and evens? Perhaps instead of preventing them, the conflicts between different groups make them actually come true.

From outside the Stone looks smaller than it is because besides the big library there are also some abandoned cities and even more. Unfortunately everything is ruined by the seventh chamber and how author used it in the story. The last chamber is like a portal to the vast Universe. Everything gets even more crazy when the aliens=people from future and the creators of the Stone are introduces into the story. Plus, in some mysterious way at the end we end up in the Ancient Egypt with Cleopatra.

For me Eon was just too much political, especially the speculation about nuclear war, and it doesn’t surprise me that USSR still exists. What did surprise me was the short time after the area is contaminated by the radiation it is safe to live in those places. Maybe the author was inspired by the Cuban Missile Crisis.

From the characters the only one that stayed in mind was Patricia Luisa Vasquez. If the ideas were actually quite good, then the execution not so much.

Anthony Burgess – A Clockwork Orange (Audiobook)

227463

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

A vicious fifteen-year-old “droog” is the central character of this 1963 classic, whose stark terror was captured in Stanley Kubrick’s magnificent film of the same title.

In Anthony Burgess’s nightmare vision of the future, where criminals take over after dark, the story is told by the central character, Alex, who talks in a brutal invented slang that brilliantly renders his and his friends’ social pathology. A Clockwork Orange is a frightening fable about good and evil, and the meaning of human freedom. When the state undertakes to reform Alex—to “redeem” him—the novel asks, “At what cost?”

Mana recenzija (pārdomas)/My (thoughts) review

***************************************

Alex is only 15 years old but together with three friends or as he call them ‘’droogs’’ he already knows in and out what the criminal world and activities can offer. And their cannot be a bigger happiness to punch someone from your heart. It seems that Alex has a special anger against literature and/or writers.

But soon everything changes when one of the robberies suffers a failure and from all four it’s Alex who is captured. The method that the government chooses to apply is questionable and in my opinion there are more downsides. Basically it’s a brainwashing forcing the felon to watch cruel and very unpleasant videos until even the thoughts about violence or just hearing the music which was played during the videos make you physically sick.

You can tell that just an imprisonment probably wouldn’t have changed Alex and his behavior for the better, and of course in this book his character is an extreme for such person. But is it the right way to fight this problem by taking away a choice and actually a free will.

Also this method easily could be used ill-intentioned by the people in power who could be tempted to abuse their power to not only to teach a lesson to some criminals but also political opponents. And in that way making sure that no one could endanger their positions and control.

As the book continued I was annoyed by Russian Anglicism slang~, from which some words the author invented himself. Plus I didn’t like the voice narrator for the edition I had and maybe that could also be blamed for the low rating.

Aldous Huxley – Brave New World (audiobook)

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

Far in the future, the World Controllers have created the ideal society. Through clever use of genetic engineering, brainwashing and recreational sex and drugs, all its members are happy consumers. Bernard Marx seems alone harbouring an ill-defined longing to break free. A visit to one of the few remaining Savage Reservations, where the old, imperfect life still continues, may be the cure for his distress…

Huxley’s ingenious fantasy of the future sheds a blazing light on the present and is considered to be his most enduring masterpiece.

Mana recenzija/My review

In the far future world children are created artificially with heavy genetic manipulation, and the following upbringing completely controlled by those in power, starting already when they are in cradles with hypnotic therapy where they forced to listen to repeated sentences until they believe to them as their own thoughts later in life. Such an anarchy as parents is something unthinkable and even repulsive.

Society is divided in castes and at the top besides World Controllers are alphas who have more privileges, plus there are no old people. At least according to ideas and thoughts of this system leaders their world order is the best thing that has happened and society in general wants nothing else as to be happy and not to think about for themselves, of course for World Controllers that’s conveniently. If I understand correctly such situation was born after devastating nine year war. To prevent instability there isn’t anything that wouldn’t be done and everything unpleasant is perceived as a risk towards chaos.

There are still some places, reservations, no doubt because of Controllers generosities, where people still are living as before enjoying culture and also their rights to be unhappy. Mainly we have Bernard’s POV, but there are few chapters from POV of other characters like the savage (at least I didn’t hear his name). Women in this world don’t have much saying, and although mostly it’s genetic breading pregnancy is still practiced but only as something to cheer women up. Partly it could be justified because World Controllers are controlling science and what can it do. In fears that some new invention might bring trouble they are actually preventing the growth.

However the story is about future world I think this book in its style of language and predictions have outdated itself, probably also some influence of the time.

Certainly this book is trying to discuss the question how technology is affecting each of us and as society together; is it doing more good or bad?

Ian Fleming ”For Your Eyes Only” (James Bond (Original Series) book 8)

314263

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads:

“Bond watched her as she reached the edge of the tables and came up the aisle. It was hopeless. She was coming to meet someone—her lover. She was the sort of woman who always belongs to somebody else. What damnable luck!
Before Bond could pull himself together, the girl had come up to his table and sat down. ‘I’m sorry I’m late. We’ve got to get moving at once. You’re wanted at the office.’ She added under her breath: ‘Crash dive.’”

Sudden emergencies and beautiful girls who aren’t quite what they seem and are the stock-in-trade of James Bond. And when 007 is on the case there’s only one thing you can be sure of—the result will be thrilling. And whether he’s dealing with the assassination of a Cuban thug in America, the destruction of an international heroin ring, or sudden death in the Seychelles, Bond gets the job done. In his own suave and unmistakable style…

Mana recenzija

Bez minētajiem diviem bija – Risico, The Hildebrand Rarity un From a View to a Kill.
